FFMAA’s focus is to change people’s lives through martial arts.  We work diligently to improve our community, student by student, on a daily basis.  We believe people need to be role models for their friends, family and community and work hard to make the world a better place.

At FFMAA, our job is to make people more successful.  We pledge ourselves to the pursuit of excellence.  By consistent example, we will develop that passion for excellence in others.

We realize that Martial Arts is only a means to a desirable end: The end result for our students should be to help them develop citizenship, self confidence, self reliance, discipline, respect, positive self regard, physical, mental and emotional fitness and the ability to set and achieve desirable goals.

We realize the opportunity and take the responsibility to help each student reach their fullest potential in all aspects of their lives.  Each student should be able to reach their potential in developing Knowledge, Honesty and Strength both physically and mentally.

We will strive to become the #1 Martial Arts instruction organization in the U.S.  We realize that this will only become a reality by providing outstanding student service, by maintaining a positive outlook and positive environment, by developing unity in our staff and school, and by returning the benefits of our success to our students.  http://www.francisfongacademy.com

Dick Harrell Martial Arts in Charlotte, NC

No one system, style, or individual possesses all the answers

“It is our vision that each student through our teachings, will learn to appreciate the martial arts of all cultures and value what each has to offer. Further, that the student will learn to adapt and modify to his/her own unique skills, attributes and personality, for no one system, style, or individual possesses all the answers…”  http://www.dick-harrell.com

“A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell, where his influence stops.” Henry Brooks Adams

Dick Harrell began his martial arts training in Japanese Shotokan Karate in 1971. In 1974 he met former Bruce Lee student Larry Hartsell and was accepted as Sifu Larry’s student. At that time Sifu Larry was teaching out of a friend’s Kung Fu school. Sifu Larry had a screening process whereby prospective students aspiring to train in Jeet Kune Do with him must first spend a minimum of one year in the Kung Fu program. Dick was the first student in the Charlotte Branch allowed to forego this process and be immediately accepted for JKD training under Sifu Hartsell. He trained with Sifu Hartsell from 1974-1982, at which time Sifu Hartsell moved to California to be closer to his teacher and mentor, Sifu Dan Inosanto. In 1978, Sifu Hartsell introduced Dick to Sifu Inosanto, which began a whole new level of training as well as perspective and understanding of his Jeet Kune Do training. Although both Sifu Larry and Dick had already begun their Filipino Martial Arts training by this time, meeting Sifu Inosanto signaled the beginning of a new chapter for both men. In 1980, Sifu Hartsell and Dick opened the first recognized and authorized Jeet Kune Do Academy on the entire east coast. The curriculum consisted of Sifu Larry’s early JKD: Chinese Kickboxing, Western Boxing, trapping hands and some grappling, although the latter not as extensively as it would be in later years. Dick went on to become the first full instructor on the east coast in both Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts under Sifu Inosanto. In 1984, Sifu Inosanto arranged for him to meet Ajarn Surachai “Chai” Sirisute, founder and President of the Thai Boxing Assoc of USA (TBA), and the man responsible for bringing Muay Thai (Thai Boxing) in to the US in 1968. At that time, Sifu Inosanto required all of his students to train with and attain at least the beginning instructor’s certificate under Ajarn Chai. Dick was accepted by Ajarn Chai as his student and, after progressing through the ranks, received his full instructor credentials in Muay Thai in 2005. He continues to travel and train with both of these “masters/mentors” regularly, as well as help them to promote the arts and culture of which they are so passionate. Dick presently serves as the TBA Representative for North and South Carolina.

Mountain Martial Arts Academy in Asheville, NC

www.mountainmartialartsacademy.com

Sifu Larry Rice began his journey into a life devoted to the martial arts at age 9.  His father spent 27 years in the armed forces, starting as a Marine Corp grunt at 17 after lying about his age to join, doing three tours of duty in Vietnam, and ending up as an Army Ranger.  The Rices moved around a lot, covering 23 states and two foreign countries, so Larry found himself in the unfortunate role of “new kid” throughout childhood.   After one particularly bloody incident at the hands of some bigger kids, the elder Larry Rice–who was at that time a Marine Special Forces hand to hand combat trainer–intervened and decided to teach his son some skills.

Larry’s dad taught him a jab, a hook, and a cross, along with a few take-down moves; just enough to learn some self-defense and pique young Larry’s interest in the martial arts.  “He stuffed a military duffel bag and hung it in the lawn mower shed for a punching bag,” Sifu recalls.

During high school, Larry took up wrestling, and fought his way to state championships for the 132 pound division during 1975 and 1976.  During this period he would attend martial arts classes with friends as a guest until the school insisted he join and pay tuition.  Larry would then move on to another friend at another school, which exposed Larry to new and different disciplines.

As a young man in his twenties, Larry dabbled in Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Kung Fu, Judo, and Jujitsu, and trained extensively in Wahlum Praying Manthis Kung Fu in Orlando Florida.  He returned to Western North Carolina in 1983 and, innocently enough, attended a Tim Tackett andLarry Hartsell seminar hosted by Sifu Vic Payne.  Little did he know that day he set foot on his road to becoming Sifu Larry Rice.  http://www.mountainmartialartsacademy.com

Philosophy
At CMAAF, we use progressive training programs to enhance conditioning, endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. The physical training leads to a healthier body and gives students the tools to defend themselves. Although the physical training is the medium we use, the training also develops the inner self, sharpening both the physical weapons and the spirit. The self-discipline developed through consistent practice develops greater self-confidence and self-respect. This personal growth will help students break through their perceived limitations in all areas of life. By setting and achieving goals in training, you learn to reach and exceed your goals in work, relationships and other areas.  http://cma-sc.com
